Jake Sully – Hero’s Journey
The Mundane World
Jake was paralyzed from the waist downwards. He was looking for a way back into the military.
The Call To Adventure
After the death of his twin brother, who was working on the Avatar program, Jake was re-called to the military. They needed him to for his genetically identical body in his brother’s place.
Crossing The Threshold
Jake was able to take advantage of the program and regain the use of legs, all be it in an Avatar body. He was now able to travel the world of Pandora as one of the indigenous Na’vi.
The Path of Trials
Jake eventually overcomes his fellow Avatar counterparts’ initial prejudices due to his military background. Norm Spellman, Max Patel and Dr. Grace Augustine all become close allies.
They form a united front against Colonel Miles Quaritch who would prefer to see the native Na’vi removed through military force, rather than peaceful means. This would allow the mining of a very valuable mineral called Unobtanium
The Avatar group receive additional support from Trudy Chacon, a pilot, who soon recognizes the Colonel’s self serving and destructive plans.
Jake’s initial task was to infiltrate the Na’vi and better understand their ways. He was to then use this understanding to persuade a movement away from their Tree of Souls that blocked any possible mining of Unobtanium.
Sully has a chance meeting with Neytiri, a Na’vi princess. She slowly shows him how to become at one with the nature of Pandora and be accepted by her people. Jake understands the Na’vi way and does not want to see it destroyed, the Colonel soon realizes he has lost Jake to the Na’vi.
After the attack on the Tree of Souls, Jake manages to unite the Na’vi people to fight back and save Pandora.
Master of Two Worlds
After the defeat of the military, Jake leaves his human body permanently and becomes a Na’vi. Through his experience he is able to keep the Na’vi people united and send the military back to Earth.
