Korben Dallas – Hero’s Journey

The Mundane World

Korben Dallas is a taxi driver in New York City in the year 2263.  He used to be a major in the special forces of the Federated Army.  He still has all of his special forces skills, but has chosen the less stressful job of driving taxis.

The Call To Adventure

While driving his taxi, Dallas encounters an orange-haired girl who falls through the taxi’s roof.  She doesn’t speak English, but he establishes that she needs help.  In quick time, he is chased by a large group of police officers, narrowly escaping.  Dallas learns the girl’s name is Leeloo.  He takes her to see a priest named Cornelius.  Cornelius quickly ushers Dallas out.

Crossing The Threshold

After winning a rigged competition for a trip to Fhloston, Paradise, Dallas finds himself leaving the planet with Leeloo.  He is held responsible by the President for her safety as she tries to retrieve the four stones that represent the first four elements.

The Path of Trials

Leeloo and Dallas are pursued by Cornelius, numerous deadly Mangalores, and the mega-businessman, Zorg.  After the owner of the stones, the Diva, is attacked and the ship taken over by the Mangalores, Dallas and Leeloo are separated.  Dallas falls in with the famous DJ, Ruby Rhod, who offers token assistance.

As the Mangalores start tearing apart the ship, Dallas finds the stones and escapes with Leeloo, Rhod, Cornelius, and Cornelius’ assistant.  Zorg, who had personally traveled to retrieve the stones, dies in the exploding ship.

The group return to Earth where they must use the stones to prevent the destruction of the universe.

Master of Two Worlds

Dallas’ final move is to convince Leeloo that the universe is worth saving.  She has seen atrocities while in existence and doesn’t see a point in saving everyone.  Through his experiences with Leeloo Dallas has changed from being a self-interested cab driver into a man capable of love and expressing it.  He convinces Leeloo with a kiss and saves the universe from destruction.
