Oliver Twist – Hero’s Journey

The Mundane World

Oliver Twist was born poor and had a very unfortunate life. He starts his life in a workhouse about seventy-five miles outside of London, England.

The Call To Adventure

Oliver runs away to London and meets Jack Dawkins who is known as the Artful Dodger.

Crossing The Threshold

Jack tells him that he can come live with him. Jack lives with a man who will “give him lodgings for nothing, and never ask for change.” Oliver accepts but realizes too late that the old man named Fagin is actually a criminal.

The Path of Trials

Oliver is caught in a world he doesn’t want to be in. He manages to escape Fagin only to be caught again and forced into a robbery. He is shot as well. Oliver befriends Nancy, who protects him after he is kidnapped by Fagin’s right-hand man and Nancy’s boyfriend. He spends the rest of the story trying to get out of the life that Fagin wants him to live.

Master of Two Worlds

Through patience and a real sense of what’s right and wrong, Oliver manages to end up with Mr. Brownlow, a nice man who had saved him the first time he was in front of the judge. He learns to trust others and ends up happy.
